AUSTRALIAN + NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE DIRECTORY 2020/21 THE NATION BUILD www. d e f e n c e . d i r e c t o r y 24 CERTIFICATION, COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION THE KEY TO PMG’S AUSTRALIAN SOVEREIGN INDUSTRY CAPABILITY Australian SIC S overeign Industrial Capability is critical to Defence and Australian manufacturing must support access to skills, technology and intellectual property for current and future programs. PMG has recognised its ability to support three keys programs for Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities with: • Collins Class submarine maintenance and technology upgrade. • Continuous shipbuilding program • Land combat vehicle and technology flexibility in supporting current critical capabilities. The Australian government’s priority is for industry to be integrated into global supply chains, have modern productive and secure shipyards, employ a highly skilled workforce both for shipbuilding and sustainment. Australian industry must also have the ability to update and upgrade systems and equipment to enable the Australian Defence Force’s land combat vehicles to meet current and future challenges. Broad Australian industry involvement in the delivery of the new Combat Recon- naissance Vehicle program, will ensure Australia develops the sovereign capability to maintain a lethal, relevant and effective capability into the future PMG focus is on three key areas to deliver solid Sovereign Industry Capability within Australia and have successfully delivered on the below with more to come. • Certification to comply with International Prime standard practice in other parts of the world • Collaboration with international SME’s for knowledge transfer and local industry upskilling • Innovation to help stream line production and be globally competitive CERTIFICATION It has been a rigorous journey to achieve the necessary accreditation to validate a competent and compliant manufacturing company from West- ern Sydney. However, the hard work has paid off, to hold international certification for IIW ISO 3834-2, Germany military certification of DIN 2303 Q2 BK1 and ISO 27001 Information security management system covering requirements for the Defence programs in Australia and International. These certifications place PMG at the forefront of welding and Manufacturing in Australia creating an Australian Sovereign and capable company ready to support Primes, OEM’s and other SME’s for local and international Defence programs. “Gaining the certification was difficult, and without the whole team working together on the common goal it could not have been achievable.” COLLABORATION Probatec AG is based in Germany and has been a long-term supplier of military seating systems to Rheinmetall Defence in Germany and also Rhein- metall Defence in Australia. Gaining certification to DIN 2303 enabled PMG to enter the international defence supply chain and establish contact with Probatec AG with a view to working together. Our agreement with Probatec AG is to establish a local Australian manufacturing capability that can deliver world class seat parts and products that will protect soldiers in Australia and overseas. In 2019 PMG started testing and training our team to develop the products Probatec AG requires and have already commenced exporting parts to Germany. STEM programs with local Schools, Tafe and Universities have allowed PMG to tap into some young talented minds and fresh drive supported by our in-house training facilities. This has been a great success since opening in 2019 as we continue to invest in our staff along with the next generation making sure we sustain the Australian sovereignty and Capability for future generations. Collaboration is a key factor to help grow the workforce and sustain the knowledge base within Australian SME’s “Our vision is to undertake long-term projects by enhancing our facility and workforce through increasing engineering cadets, apprenticeships, women in non-traditional roles, Indigenous and Veteran programs” INNOVATION A strategic and controlled approach to the ‘Industry 4.0’ Manufacturing capabilities within Australian Industry, will support the work we already have underway at PMG as well as ensure we deliver the best possible products for our Defence customers in Australia. With the upgraded technology of machinery, we plan to bring together the knowledge and skill base of the aging demographic in this industry, with the fresh and tech-savvy minds of the younger generation to work together and educate each other. This will provide an efficient productive multi-skilled and competitive manufacturing company for the Australian and International supply chain. Our focus is the same as the Sovereign Industrial Capability Priority. To ‘Employ, Sustain and Upgrade’. Our business history reflects continual growth in all three areas, whilst emphasising the capability of the Australian Manufacturing Industry. Without discounting of our non-defence client base.
