Mechanisms include With the launch of More, Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030 in May 2020, Defence is transforming the way it partners with the national science and tech- nology enterprise. Potential partners are be- ing engaged from the outset to ensure early buy-in, remove disconnects in innovation pathways and shorten the time to translate research into Defence capability. Specific partnering initiatives are being de- veloped to shape the broader science and technology community. This includes grow- ing capabilities in critical areas of science and technology, leveraging research networks and encouraging multi-party collaboration. DST also pursues the involvement of industry and the science and technology community in strategic research through the Science, Technology and Research (STaR) Shots in- troduced in More, Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030. Defence in- novation programs, such as the Next Gen- eration Technologies Fund, also provide the basis for engaging industry, academia and publicly-funded research agencies in re- search and development for Defence. The collaboration arrangements used by DST typically include strategic alliances, Coopera- tive Research Centres, collaborative research agreements and centres of expertise, as well as targeted procurement to support specific activities. Other mechanisms through which DST works with industry and the science and technology community include: licensing arrangements for the transfer of knowledge, expertise and technology for commercialisation activities; engaging directly with suppliers to support the delivery of Australian Defence contracts; and conducting fee-for-service research and providing access to facilities. The CDIC is funded by Defence and located within the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources to leverage the expe- rience and industry expertise of AusIndustry and to enhance collaboration with broader AusIndustry innovation and business assis- tance initiatives. The CDIC provides advisory and facilitation services, matched grants and industry re- sources to Australian businesses to support Australia’s defence capability.
