AUSTRALIAN+NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE DIRECTORY 2026 INDUSTRY GROUPS, ASSOCIATIONS & GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS www.defence.directory 33 The IIP identifies defence specific capabilities the Government will invest in to give effect to the NDS. It provides a generational uplift in Defence’s capabilities and reflects a coherent, logical and affordable plan to transition the ADF to an integrated, focused force. Together, the NDS and IIP provide a blueprint to deliver an ambitious transformation of the ADF to ensure it is positioned to safeguard Australia’s security and contribute to regional peace and prosperity for decades to come. Defence will work with industry, universities and research agencies to deliver an innovative, resilient and competitive defence industrial base that creates a stronger, more secure Australia. Potential partners are being engaged from the outset to ensure early buy-in, remove disconnects in innovation pathways and shorten the time to translate research into Defence capability. Specific partnering initiatives continue to be refined and tailored to shape the broader science and technology community. This includes growing capabilities in critical areas of science and technology, leveraging research networks and encouraging multi-party collaboration. The collaboration arrangements used by DSTG typically include strategic Research and Development Alliances, Cooperative Research Centres, collaborative research agreements and centres of expertise, as well as targeted procurement to support specific activities. SCIENCE, RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY (STAR) SHOTS The Science, Technology and Research (STaR) Shot program will continue to inspire and mobilise the Defence innovation, science and technology (IS&T) ecosystem to shape enduring IS&T investment that offers significant capability advantage. Responding to the priorities outlined in the National Defence Strategy, the STaR Shot program supports the future integrated force by harnessing and developing emerging and disruptive technologies and their applications. The STaR Shot program enables Defence to avoid or deliberately create strategic surprise or disruption. Individual STaR Shots are designed to provide thought-leadership and clear signals to all elements of the IS&T ecosystem, supporting the focus on high priority issues and scaling IS&T activities to the appropriate size driven by need to generate impactful outcomes. BENEFITS FOR AUSTRALIA’S WEALTH AND SECURITY The work of DSTG and ASCA to partner and transfer technology to Australian industry has numerous benefits for Australia’s wealth and security. The Australian Defence Force benefits from the evolution of sustainable, competitive Australian defence industry capabilities and the savings delivered by improved technology and products tailored to meet its requirements. Australian businesses, including SMEs, benefit from exposure to DSTG’s research base, introduction to new technology and Defence markets, the development of spinoff products with civilian applications, and income from domestic sales and exports. DSTG benefits through experience gained during the widespread application of its technology and expertise, enabling it to enhance its research base. Further Information www.dst.defence.gov.au ADVANCED STRATEGIC CAPABILITIES ACCELERATOR (ASCA) ASCA’s mission is to accelerate the development and transition of asymmetric capabilities to the Australian Defence Force through innovation in order to meet Defence priority needs. ASCA is a key element of Australia’s Defence innovation efforts to accelerate the development of capabilities that can be rapidly put into operational use, to enable and contribute to the National Defence Strategy enunciated strategy of denial. Opportunities for industry and academia to partner with ASCA exist through three programs, aligned to deliver capability that accords to the National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program. • Missions are focused on rapidly pulling through disruptive technologies into capabilities that meet Defence’s most pressing needs. Each are driven by problem statements aligned to Defence priorities with an endorsed acquisition pathway. • Innovation Incubation program is driven by challenge statements that address capability priorities and will rapidly adapt, test and acquire technologies through short-term, lower cost projects. • Emerging and Disruptive Technologies program is delivered by Defence Science and Technology Group and invests in long-term research partnerships that will benefit future Defence capability.
