ASPI has a focus on informing public policy and generates new ideas for national security, defence and foreign policy makers, allowing them to make better-informed decisions. ASPI is one of the most authoritative and widely quoted contributors to public discussion of strategic policy issues in the Indo-Pacific region and a recognised Australian voice in international discussions on strategic, defence, national security, cyber, technology and foreign interference issues. ASPI convenes major summits and events on the topics that are front and centre in the public debate. This includes the Sydney Dialogue, the region’s premier global summit on cyber and critical technologies; an annual defence conference bringing together the public and private sectors on major defence and strategic issues; and the Darwin Dialogue on critical minerals. ASPI’s strength is its convening power to bring together leading global thinkers and policymakers on the topics that will shape the future of our societies and to drive debate on the challenges facing, and policy options available to, Australia and its partners. ASPI aims, through its research, events, training activities, media engagements and podcast (Stop the World), to be innovative, accurate and well-informed and to broaden public knowledge about the critical strategic choices our country will face in the coming years. The Institute’s work helps to foster strategic expertise in Australia through dialogue, research and its contribution to public debate. ASPI was established by the Australian Government in 2001 and is partially funded by the Department of Defence and receives funding from a variety of sources, including sponsorship, research and project support from governments, industry and civil society. In 2022, ASPI opened an office in Washington DC to provide authoritative Australian perspectives on global strategic issues including the challenges and opportunities facing the Alliance, AUKUS and the Indo-Pacific. ASPI is also the only Australian think tank to have staff members in Taiwan and Europe, adding considerable expertise and heft to our analysis on the greatest challenges and threats facing democracies globally – China and Russia. SUPPORTING ASPI ASPI values the generous support we receive from our partners across governments, the private sector and civil society. This includes annual partnerships, event sponsorship and our success in competitive research grants programs. ASPI’s independent analysis and judgments are essential elements for all partnerships. Our independence is critical to our work and reputation and has been demonstrated in our research, analysis and commentary for almost 25 years across a range of public and private platforms, including conferences, reports, podcasts, dialogues and panel events.
