Through a strategy-led program of industry engagement, Defence Industry Branch designs and implements policy focused on aligning defence industry skills and technology with Defence’s capability requirements. Defence Industry Branch also leads on collaboration with key international partners to further Australia’s strategic and international objectives, including activities focused on maximising export opportunities for Australian defence industry. AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE EXPORT OFFICE The Australian Defence Export Office (ADEO) is the focal point for coordinating whole-ofgovernment export support for Australian defence industry, to ensure it can meet Australia’s defence capability needs now and into the future. The ADEO is responsible for delivering the initiatives outlined in the 2018 Defence Export Strategy. Working closely with Australian Government agencies including Austrade, Export Finance Australia, the Office for Defence Industry Support and State and Territory Governments, the ADEO provides a wide range of export support to Australian defence industry. This support includes attendance at international trade shows with the Team Defence Australia program; targeted international trade missions; inclusion in the Australian Defence Sales Catalogue; Government-to-Government sales, gifting and transfer of equipment; provision of funding through the Defence Global Competitiveness Grant program; and high-level advocacy through the Australian Defence Export Advocate. The ADEO also works closely with an international network of Defence Attachés and Austrade Business Development Managers in key markets and to facilitate Australian defence industry exports. This includes assessing and granting permits, as well as providing advice on whether goods, software, or technology are controlled by the Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL). DEC supports government, industry, academia and individuals in complying with export control requirements including through domestic outreach and issues re-export assurances to foreign governments for imports. DEC represents Australia in international export control regimes, such as the Wassenaar Arrangement, Australia Group, Missile Technology Controls Regime and Nuclear Suppliers Group which serve our broad national interests and contribute to the global effort aimed at reducing the risk of proliferation. This includes the Defence Industry Development Strategy which will establish the framework and principles for the direction of defence industry policy for what will be an important decade in Australia’s national security. It will outline the strategic rationale for Australia’s defence industry and articulate its contribution to Australia’s standing in the world and our national statecraft. This will include leveraging our close allies and partners’ technology and industrial base, to their benefit as well as ours. Other Initiatives managed by the Branch include policy oversight by the National Defence Industry Skills Office (NDISO). The NDISO is the primary point of contact within the Department of Defence for defence industry skilling policy, programs and engagement.
